Dear valued community members and potential patients,
We understand that dental emergencies can be both frightening and painful. We’re here to provide you with essential information and support during these challenging times. Whether you’re a long-time patient or new to our practice, we want you to feel prepared and confident in handling unexpected dental situations.
Dental emergencies often require prompt treatment to alleviate pain and ensure the best possible chance of saving your teeth. In this guide, we’ll walk you through common dental emergencies and provide step-by-step instructions on how to handle them until you can reach our office.
Avulsed Tooth (Tooth Knocked Out)
Time is of the essence. Here’s what to do:
• Call our office immediately.
• Gently rinse the tooth with warm water, holding it by the crown (not the root).
• If possible, try to reinsert the tooth into its socket.
• If reinsertion isn’t possible, place the tooth in milk, saliva, or water as a last resort.
• Get to our office as quickly and safely as possible.
Remember, if we can treat you within an hour, there’s a higher chance of saving the tooth.
Lost Filling or Crown
• Make a dental appointment as soon as possible.
• Keep the crown in a safe place if you have it.
• Use over-the-counter dental cement to temporarily reattach the crown or protect the exposed tooth.
• Apply clove oil to the tooth to alleviate pain.
• Avoid using any kind of glue to affix the crown.
Cracked or Broken Teeth
• Call our office right away.
• Rinse your mouth with warm water.
• If there’s bleeding, apply gauze for about 10 minutes.
• Use a cold compress on the cheek to reduce swelling and pain.
• Cover the affected area with over-the-counter dental cement if immediate care isn’t available.
• Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed.
Dislodged or Loose Teeth
• Contact our office immediately.
• Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek.
• Take over-the-counter pain medication if necessary.
• Do not attempt to force the tooth back into position on your own.
